CMHC REPORTS LOWER JANUARY NEW HOME STARTS IN HAMILTON
TORONTO, February 9, 2009 - Builders started 75 new homes in the Hamilton Census
Metropolitan Area (CMA) last month, according to preliminary housing starts data released today by
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). There was one single-detached home started
in each of Burlington and Grimsby, while new home starts edged up in Hamilton City by 18 per cent
to 73 starts.
"A slowing economy in the Hamilton CMA has affected new home construction", said Sarah Fong,
Senior Market Analyst for Hamilton. "In addition, reduced sales and increased listings in the
existing home market have led to reduced spillover demand in the new home market." added Fong.
As Canada's national housing agency, CMHC draws on more than 60 years of experience to
help Canadians access a variety of quality, environmentally sustainable, and affordable
homes - homes that will continue to create vibrant and healthy communities and cities
across the country. For more information, visit www.cmhc.ca or call 1 800 668-2642.
