FEWER NEW HOME STARTS IN HAMILTON IN FEBRUARY
TORONTO, March 9, 2009 - Fewer starts of single-detached homes last month led to decline
in housing starts in the Hamilton Census Metropolitan Area (CMA), according to preliminary
housing starts data released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). There
were 165 starts in February, down from 245 a year ago. Starts of single-detached homes
decreased, while semi-detached and townhouse starts remained unchanged from last year. There
were no condominium apartment starts, though construction began on an 82 unit rental building in
Burlington last month.
By sub-market, starts fell in both the amalgamated City of Hamilton and Grimsby but rose in
Burlington.
"Fewer starts of new homes, especially of single-detached homes, reflect the ongoing uncertainty in
the economy," said Sarah Fong, CMHC's Senior Market Analyst for Hamilton.
